What is the Political Courage Test?

Mississippi Congressional Election 2020 Political Courage Test

Pro-choice Do you generally support pro-choice or pro-life legislation?
Yes In order to balance the budget, do you support an income tax increase on any tax bracket?
Yes Do you support expanding federal funding to support entitlement programs such as Social Security and Medicare?
Universal healthcare is a basic human right. I experienced the British healthcare system first-hand and had my life saved without having to worry about hospitalization bills and I know what difference it makes. Medical debt is the main source of personal bankruptcy in the United States and most of those declaring bankruptcy have insurance. With ridiculous deductibles and outrageous monthly fees, health insurance offers little to those receiving it and largely lines the pockets of insurance companies. M4A would mean that everyone could receive necessary medical care. It does not preclude the possibility of supplemental private insurance for non-essential care.
Yes Do you support the regulation of indirect campaign contributions from corporations and unions?
No Do you support the protection of government officials, including law enforcement officers, from personal liability in civil lawsuits concerning alleged misconduct?
We must end qualified immunity. No person deserves to be above the law.
No Do you support increasing defense spending?
We spend more on defense than the next ten countries combined. This is unnecessary and a waste of our resources. We should spend more on helping our veterans and providing them with the medical care they need, and less money on the military-industrial complex.
Yes Do you support federal spending as a means of promoting economic growth?
No Do you support lowering corporate taxes as a means of promoting economic growth?
Yes Do you support providing financial relief to businesses AND/OR corporations negatively impacted by the state of national emergency for COVID-19?
No Do you support requiring states to adopt federal education standards?
We need to reduce standardized testing at a state level. Adding additional standards would simply mean more tests. Our children and our educators need less of that, not more of that.
Yes Do you support government funding for the development of renewable energy (e.g. solar, wind, geo-thermal)?
Yes Do you support the federal regulation of greenhouse gas emissions?
Climate change is the greatest crisis we face. We should have acted years ago. If we do not act now, there will be no planet for future generations.
Yes Do you generally support gun-control legislation?
I support limited gun-control legislation. I believe that the 2nd Amendment gives us a right to carry guns. However, anyone convicted of domestic abuse or violent assault should be prohibited from ever carrying a gun again.
No Do you support repealing the 2010 Affordable Care Act ("Obamacare")?
Yes Do you support requiring businesses to provide paid medical leave during public health crises, such as COVID-19?
No Do you support the construction of a wall along the Mexican border?
No Do you support requiring immigrants who are unlawfully present to return to their country of origin before they are eligible for citizenship?
Our nation is a nation of immigrants. What makes us great is the influx of cultures and diversities of experiences, and we should encourage that, not restrict it.
No Should the United States use military force to prevent governments hostile to the U.S. from possessing a weapon of mass destruction (for example: nuclear, biological, chemical)?
Yes Do you support reducing military intervention in Middle East conflicts?
It is not our place to play global policeman. We should intervene militarily in foreign affairs only as part of a coalition of states.
Yes Do you generally support removing barriers to international trade (for example: tariffs, quotas, etc.)?
As an international trade scholar, I see the value in reducing barriers to trade. However, my support is qualified, particularly with respect to issues of sustainable development, renewable energy, and our imposition of strict international trade rules on developing countries of the Global South.
Universal healthcare. A Green New Deal, with a focus on rural America and how that can help us develop economically while combating climate change. A wealth tax. Increasing tax rates on the wealthiest Americans and big corporations will benefit most Americans. Tax rates on the rich have never been lower and income inequality in the United States is higher than ever before. Taxing the richest Americans and big corporation will provide funding for many policies that will benefit all Americans.
